But we'll always be straight with you: a destination wedding isn't the right fit for everyone. There are real challenges that come with the territory, and we'd rather you go in clear-eyed than get halfway through planning and realize it's not what you pictured.

So before you dive in, here are a few things worth considering first.

The Invitees

Start by building your guest list the same way you would for a wedding at home — invite everyone you'd want there.

Why? Because if they can't make it, there's a solid chance a gift shows up anyway. 😉

That said, be prepared: typical destination weddings see only 40–50% of invitees actually attend. Asking guests to spend money and use precious vacation days is a big ask, and even people who love you dearly may have to say no. That's not a reflection of your relationship — it's just reality.

The couples who handle this best go in with open hearts and realistic expectations. If you need a minimum headcount to feel like the day is complete, that's worth factoring into your decision early.

The Unwanted Opinions from Others

Nothing quite seems to open up the floodgates of people voicing their opinion that no one asked for quite like having a destination wedding. You've got to be prepared for it, and if you have thin skin, you may want to re-think having a destination wedding. Invitees will talk, and word will get back to you that Karen is running around town telling everyone she just can't believe you are asking everyone to spend so much money to attend your wedding! Karen will tell everyone you've gone mad, and are so selfish.

The Planning

Fair warning to our type-A couples: destination wedding planning requires a tolerance for uncertainty.

Most resorts won't touch the details — chargers, napkin holders, chair covers, ceremony location — until about three months before your wedding. Some may not even confirm where your ceremony will be held until closer to the date. If you're the kind of person who needs a color-coded binder 18 months out, that ambiguity can feel maddening.

Here's what actually helps: an outside wedding planner (separate from the resort) can give you more structure earlier in the process if you need it. We're happy to point you in the right direction.

But here's what we want you to know: the resorts aren't being careless. They do multiple weddings every single day — yes, including Tuesdays — and they have the whole thing down to a science. By the time your three-month window opens, things move quickly and smoothly. The chaos is mostly in the waiting, not the execution.

The question is whether you can enjoy the engagement period without having every detail locked down. Some couples love it. Others... need a spicy marg and a pep talk. We're here for both.
